The Hudson Valley Scoliosis Correction Center sets itself apart from other treatment clinics by focusing on treating the root causes of scoliosis, not merely addressing the symptoms.

Most mainstream practitioners generally deal with the symptoms of Scoliosis, while never actually addressing the underlying cause of Scoliosis. The three most common recommendations of traditional medicine are watching and waiting, bracing, and surgery, each of which is often accompanied by serious, negative consequences.

Given the limitations of majority medicine’s approach, it should come as no surprise that people travel from all over the country and the world to be treated by Dr. Strauss at the Hudson Valley Scoliosis Correction Center. Every patient at the Hudson Valley Scoliosis  receives corrective treatment for their scoliosis that has been specifically tailored to meet their specific treatment needs and which allows them to avoid the use of scoliosis braces or the need for scoliosis surgery . What’s more, the treatment received in the clinic at the hands of Dr. Strauss addresses the causes of scoliosis and provides long term healing solutions, not temporary fixes which may briefly alleviate symptoms before making the overall condition worse.

CLEAR Scoliosis Treatment

Established in 2000, the Chiropractic Leadership, Educational Advancement & Research, (CLEAR) Institute offers an alternative approach to the 3 most common scoliosis treatment options offered by the majority of orthopedic scoliosis specialists. The mission of the CLEAR Institute is to “empower the chiropractic and medical community with the mission of implementing an effective chiropractic system of scoliosis treatment and care to effectively treat the condition of scoliosis without the use of bracing or by performing surgery.”

The initial step in the CLEAR treatment protocols is the gathering of information about the biomechanical function of the entire spine of the patient and not merely the areas directly affected by scoliosis. To obtain this information, seven small, precise x-rays are necessary. These initial x-rays are used as a starting point to measure patient progress. Subsequent progress is monitored and determined throughout the treatment process through interval x-ray examinations, generally every 3 to 6 months, depending on the severity of the patient’s scoliosis.

Once the necessary patient information has been gathered and recorded the treatment can begin. Following the CLEAR protocols, Dr. Strauss and his staff at Hudson Valley Scoliosis Correction Center will begin the treatment process with the patient, following a 3 step process.

1. Mix (warm-up the spine)  2. Fix (adjust the spine)  3. Set (lock spinal corrections)

Step 1: MIX (warm-up or “prehab”)

Before receiving chiropractic adjustments, the patient warms up their spine using specialized equipment to relax the ligaments and soft tissues of the spine. This step is very important because, otherwise, the inter-vertebral discs will be rigid and inflexible, and it will be difficult if not impossible to effect lasting structural changes to the spine.

Step 2: FIX (specific, instrument-assisted adjusting)

In accordance with CLEAR protocols, at Hudson Valley Scoliosis, almost all adjusting of the neck and the back are performed with the use of mechanical adjusting instruments that enhance the precision and effectiveness of chiropractic care, while also reducing the amount of force required to correct the spine.

Step 3: SET (rehab stage)

Immediately after the adjustment is completed, the spine is “set” in its corrected position to ensure the permanency of the changes, using Neuromuscular Reeducation (NMR) and gait therapy, which re-trains patterns of moving and walking. In addition, a patient-specific scoliosis exercise program is conducted at home twice daily. If the SET or NMR protocols are not followed, any corrections achieved in the spine will be temporary.

The Expanded Care Treatment Option

We offer an expanded treatment plan for patients who live within 100 miles of the center. This option is essentially the same as the intensive care except the patient is seen 2-3 times per week over the period of 4-6 months without school interruption.

Intensive Scoliosis Treatment Option

Only treatment centers that are appropriately certified by the CLEAR Institute are able to provide this treatment. A certain criteria must be met for acceptance into this program:

  • Patients with a curvature(s) LESS than 25 degrees require 1 week of intensive treatment.
  • Patients with a curvature(s) MORE than 25 degrees require 2 weeks of intensive treatment.
If curvature is less than 25 degrees

Curves measuring less than 25 degrees will receive the entire treatment program. These smaller curves have their treatment plan focused on the neuromuscular rehabilitation component of the program. The goal will be to stabilize the spine at a curve less than 10 degrees. Our highest priority will be to reduce and stabilize the curve before it reaches 30 degrees. Typically if a curve surpasses 20 degrees the chance of progression is 70%.

Which treatment plan is right for you?

Intensive Expanded
Rapid results & curve reduction Gradual reduction of curve
Less time commitment to office treatment More time commitment to office treatment
Maintenance solely dependent on home rehab Maintenance split between office & home
and coordination with a local practitioner, if available
Less travel time to and from office More travel time to and from office
